28 apartments rise just south of the Hollywood Freeway

Just south of the US-101 Freeway in Hollywood, an early 20th century building most recently inhabited by a church has made way for an infill apartment complex with a vintage look.

The project, now taking shape at the northwest corner of Gower Street and Carlos Avenue, was issued entitlements last year by the Planning Department, and received building permits in April. Approved plans call for the construction of a four-story edifice featuring 28 one-, two-, and three-bedroom dwellings above at-grade parking for 27 vehicles.

Architect Kamran Tabrizi designed the low-rise structure, which will feature a white stucco exterior with several Art Deco elements. Plans indicate the building will include a side courtyard and a recreation room.

City records list the project applicant and developer as Albert Barritos of the Playa Vista-based entity Bar 216, LLC. The development site last traded in 2016 for just over $1 million, roughly one year prior to when the application for the now under-construction apartment building was filed with the Planning Department.

The development site sits just east of the intersection of Argyle Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard, where more than 1,000 apartments have replaced surface parking lots serving the Pantages Theatre, and one block north of Hollywood and Gower, where a 22-story residential tower is slated to rise next to the Fonda Theatre.
