At the intersection of Pico and Crenshaw Boulevards in Mid-City, the wrapping is off at The Amani apartments, a new senior affordable housing complex from Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation.
The project, located on a previously empty lot at the southwest corner of the intersection, consists of a five-story edifice that will feature 54-unit apartments and approximately 2,500 square feet of ground-floor retail space at completion.
At the time Wakeland applied for tax credit financing in 2020, rents for the apartments at the Amani were expected to start at $548 per month. The apartments are to be reserved for rent by very low-income senior households.
Abode Communities is designing the contemporary podium-type building, which will include a community room, a laundry facility, a roof deck, and a landscaped courtyard.
At the time of the project's groundbreaking, general contractor R.D. Olson Construction announced that Amani would be completed in the third quarter of 2022.
Wakeland, a San Diego-based developer, is also behind proposed and under-construction developments in Westlake, Pico-Union, and Vermont Square.
