A year-and-a-half after breaking ground, a tower crane is the most visible sign of progress at the future home of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering’s Department of Computer Science.

The Dr. Allen and Charlotte Ginsburg Human-Centered Computation Hall, which replaced a surface parking lot on Downey Avenue just east of Vermont Avenue, will eventually consist of a seven-story building bounded by Michelson Hall to the east and Irani Hall to the north. Plans call for approximately 116,000 square feet of space, which will be used for students and researchers developing robots, applications, drones, and artificial intelligence systems.

HOK is designing the contemporary mid-rise structure, which will include a mix of research labs and offices for faculty, as well as administrative services. Plans also call for a 300-seat auditorium, study spaces, and a 25-foot-deep aerial robotics flight area for testing drones.

At the time of its groundbreaking in May 2021, completion of Ginsburg Hall was expected in 2023.

The project is named in honor of Dr. Allen and Charlotte Ginsburg Human-Centered Computation Hall, its principal donors.
