Three design options for Hollywood Burbank Airport's new terminal

For years, the joint powers authority which owns and manages Hollywood Burbank Airport has sought to replace the facility's aging passenger terminal with a new, modern facility. This month, the public finally gets its look at three design options for the project, which is dubbed Elevate BUR.

The project, approved through the passage of Measure B by Burbank voters in November 2016, calls for the construction of a new 355,000-square-foot replacement terminal with 14 passenger gates in the northeast section of the airport property. In addition, plans call for new parking facilities, a replacement airline cargo building, maintenance facilities for ground service equipment, and other ancillary features.

Corgan is headlining the design-build team for the project, which also includes IHolder, Pankow, TEC, CannonDesign, andBurns & McDonnell. Three concepts are being presented for public review, including:

The Century, which features a look inspired by Mid-Century Modern Architecture, with clean lines and a light-filled hall that allows for view corridors

The Icon, which is inspired by Hollywood "glitz and glamor," and the film industry, with an overarching canopy that morphs into the facade of the airport garage and overlooks an entry plaza like a silver screen

The Paseo, which maintains human scale, with a connection to the outdoors and features that allow light and shadows to play throughout the terminal

Designs for the project  are on display starting this week at the existing terminal, Burbank public libraries, and the city halls of Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena. A final design concept will be selected on April 17.
