A presentation scheduled for the March 23 meeting of the West Hollywood Planning Commission’s Design Review Subcommittee reveals a new look for a proposed affordable housing development which would rise a few blocks south of the Sunset Strip.
The proposed project from West Hollywood Community Housing Corp., announced three years ago, is slated for an approximately 14,400-square-foot site 910 N. Wetherly Drive, adjacent to the First Baptist Church of Beverly Hills. At the time, plans called for the construction of a seven-story building with 100 apartments, which could have moved forward under two different design iterations.
The revised plan, as detailed in a staff report, is slightly smaller in scale than originally envisioned. While it would stand seven stories in height, the proposed residential density has been reduced to 89 units, which would be built in a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units atop parking for 66 vehicles.
According to the West Hollywood Community Housing website, the apartments will include units catering to low- and moderate-income households, including workforce housing and those with special needs.
OfficeUntitled is designing the new iteration of the 910 Wetherly development, which is shown in renderings as a contemporary podium-type building clad in metal, cement, and plaster. The building, which is described in a staff report as having an O-shaped footprint surrounding a courtyard, would also include a community room, a laundry facility, and offices for on-site staff.
A staff report to the Commission notes that the project includes thoughtful strategies to lessen the building's mass on its front-facing facade, but also indicates that additional refinements could improve its roof level and perimeter landscaping.
