At a meeting earlier this week, the Los Angeles City Council signed off on plans from a local developer build a mid-rise hotel near the intersection of Sunset and Cahuenga Boulevards in Hollywood.
Since September 2020, Highland Park-based developer NELA Homes has sought to raze a mid-century commercial building at 6445 W. Sunset Boulevard to clear the way for a new 13-story building featuring a 175-room hotel, 11,400 square feet of restaurant space, and a 72-car garage.
The proposed project, designed by Archeon Group, will include an approximately 173-foot-tall tower, capped by a rooftop restaurant. Renderings depicted a building with an exterior of glass and metal mesh screens facing Sunset Boulevard, masking above-grade parking levels.
The City Council's vote affirms the City Planning Commission's earlier approval of a zone change required for the project.
An environmental study conducted for the project points to an approximately 22-month construction period for the building following a groundbreaking.
The City Council also voted to reject an appeal of the project's environmental clearance from SAFER, an affiliate of Laborers International Union of North America Local 270 (LIUNA), which frequently emerges as an opponent to entitlement cases before the city.
In its appeal, SAFER alleges that the project would have unanticipated environmental impacts - including potential exposure to formaldehyde during construction - and is in violation of local zoning regulations. A response from the Planning Department disputed the claims raised by the appellant, and recommend approval of the project.
The project is the latest addition to a budding hotel between Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards to the north, following existing hotels such as the Dream Hollywood and Mama Shelter. Also in the works is an Art Deco hotel tower on the opposite side of Sunset and Cahuenga and a mixed-use project which would combine a hotel with housing a block south on De Longpre Avenue.
