Metro has officialy entered into a $178-million contract with China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation Ltd. to purchase 64 rail cars to replace existing subway vehicles and provide new rolling stock for the Purple Line extension to Beverly Hills.
The agreement also contains five options that would allow Metro to purchase an additional 218 vehicles, making the total value of the contract 282 cars for $647 million.
The rollout of the new Red and Purple Line vehicles is expected to commence with the delivery of a pilot car in Spring 2020, with all 64 cars to follow by September 2021.
Based on a new rendering posted by the Source, the HR 4000 vehicles will be produced with the silver-and-yellow color scheme that is seen on most of Metro's light rail fleet.
