Construction begins for new veterans supportive housing at the VA Campus

A groundbreaking ceremony held on June 27 at the West Los Angeles VA Campus marked the official start of work on five projects which will create 380 homes for homeless and at-risk veterans, as well as their families.

The mix of ground-up and adaptive reuse projects comes from a team of developers, including Century Housing, Thomas Safran & Associates, The Veterans Collective, and The Core Companies. The five developments include:

Buildings 156 & 157: the adaptive reuse of existing two-story buildings as 112 apartments, including 96 studio units and 14 one-bedroom units priced for households earning between 30 and 50 percent of the area median income level, and two market-rate manager's units.
Building 401: 75 apartments - including 74 units for formerly homeless veterans - in a new three-story structure at MacArthur Field.
Building 402: a set of 11 modular buildings containing 120 studio and two-bedroom apartments, priced for formerly homeless veterans earning between 30 and 50 percent of the area median income level.
Building 404: a new three- and four-story building at the corner of Bonsall and Nimitz Avenues, featuring 73 apartments for formerly homeless veterans earning between 30 and 50 percent of the area median income level.

“These new buildings will provide safe, comfortable, and reliable housing for 380 of our nation’s heroes and their families," said Congressman Ted Lieu at the groundbreaking ceremony. "Today’s groundbreaking is another great step in the right direction, but our efforts to ensure all of our veterans have a safe place to call home will continue. I look forward to working with the Biden Administration, my colleagues in Congress, our state and local officials, advocates, and my fellow veterans to end veteran homelessness.”

All of these developments are components of a master plan for the North VA Campus which would bring 1,200 homes for unhoused veterans to sites along Wilshire Boulevard directly to the west of the 405 Freeway. Recent completions have added more than 230 new homes to the complex, including the 59-unit Building 207 apartments which debuted in March 2023 and Buildings 205 and 208, which added 120 homes in May.
