In Hollywood, a 1920s apartment complex is set to be displaced by a new high-rise development from CGI Strategies. But the building will be met with a moving van, rather than the wrecking ball.

This week, CGI filed an application with the Los Angeles Planning Department to relocate an existing two-story, 24-unit apartment building at 1830 N. Cahuenga Boulevard. The new home for the century-old structure will be two vacant parcels at 4853-4857 Melrose Avenue - located just west of the US-101 Freeway in East Hollywood.

Post relocation, the building would retain 24 apartments, which would range from 210 to 392 square feet in size. Three of those apartments would be set aside for rent by very low-income households, making the project eligible for density bonus incentives permitting more housing than otherwise allowed by the site's zoning.

Architectural Resources Group is designing the restoration project, according to city records. Plans show that the building would retain its original look and color scheme.

Relocation of the existing structure at 1830 Cahuenga would clear the way for CGI's largest project to date: a 20-story, 223-unit residential tower. That high-rise, named Franklin & Cahuenga for its cross-streets, could begin work as early as mid-2025, according to the CGI website.
