One block from the UCLA campus in Westwood, construction has gone vertical for a new multifamily housing complex from Georgia-based real estate development firm Landmark Properties.

The Mark at Los Angeles, now rising on the former site of a church at 10915 W. Strathmore Drive, will eventually consist of a seven-story building featuring 37 two-, three-, four-, and five-bedroom apartments. Those units, which would cater to students at UCLA, would account for a total of 166 bedrooms.

Landmark Properties entitled the site for development using density bonus incentives to permit a larger structure than zoning rules would typically allow. In exchange, five of the new apartments are to be set aside for rent by very low-income individuals.

LOHA is designing the project, dubbed the Mark at Los Angeles, uses a series of cubic forms to break down the building's mass and create terrace decks and common courtyards for use by residents. Plans also call for a rooftop pool deck. The building is to be clad in fiber cement boards and corrugated metal panels.

Landmark acquired the site from the Pacific Southwest District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, which had owned the land and the church which was built on the property in the mid-1950s. City records indicate that the property sold for $11.5 million in April 2022.

Landmark previously announced that completion of the Mark at Los Angeles was expected by September 2024.

The project follows a similar student-oriented apartment building wrapping up work on a neighboring site on Landfair Avenue, and coincides with work on a smaller project on Glenrock Avenue.
