At a groundbreaking ceremony held in late October, DOCS Health and Swinerton marked the start of work on a new surgical hospital near the notorious "asterisk" in Mid-Wilshire.
DOCS Surgical Hospital, which will rise at 6000 S. San Vicente Boulevard, calls for the construction of a new five-story building which will feature four operating theaters and an imaging center. Approved plans describe the complex as also including medical offices, a pharmacy, ground-floor commercial space, and a 40-car garage.
Mesa Design Architects is designing the proposed development, which depicted in a rendering as a contemporary low-rise structure clad in concrete, terra cotta, and glass. Plans call for a large "healing garden" at the rooftop of the building, described as a place for patients to recover.
Demolition of the existing hospital building at 6000 San Vicente is scheduled to begin this month. Completion for the building is on track to occur in Spring 2026.
The project is a different sort of development near the asterisk - a nickname for the convoluted intersection of San Vicente, Olympic Boulevard, and La Brea Avenue - which has more commonly seen proposals for new mixed-use residential buildings. Upcoming plans include a 120-unit complex at 6052 W. Olympic Boulevard and a 26-unit apartment complex now rising at Spaulding Avenue.
Another significant investment in healthcare - UCLA's new neuropsychiatric hospital - is also underway at the former site of Olympia Medical Center at 5900 Olympic Boulevard.
