At a ceremony with Mayor Karen Bass on November 6, San Diego-based Wakeland Housing & Development Corporation marked The Wilcox, a new affordable housing complex located a few blocks west of Metro's Vermont/Santa Monica subway station in East Hollywood.

The project, located at 4904-4920 Santa Monica Boulevard, consists of a four-story building features 62 apartments reserved for formerly unhoused seniors.

FSY Architects designed the apartment complex, which also includes on-site supportive services.

In announcing the completion of The Wilcox, Mayor Bass touted her Executive Directive 1, which has been used to facilitate entitlements for more than 8,000 affordable housing units since introduced earlier this year. An ordinance to codify ED1 procedures is currently making its way through the city review process, and is scheduled to go before the Planning Commission before the end of November - though some industry voices have pointed out some existing ED1 entitlements would not be possible under the proposed permanent rules.

"There are going to be elderly unhoused Angelenos living inside this month as opposed to later this year or early next year because of our work to expedite this project," said Bass in a news release. "By streamlining the building of affordable housing, we are saving lives. We cannot let up – the homelessness crisis is an emergency and we must continue to treat it like one."

Wakeland, in addition to the East Hollywood project, has recently build similar housing complexes in Mid-City, South L.A., and Pico Union.

The East Hollywood site sits a few blocks from the intersection of Santa Monica and New Hampshire Avenue, where Little Tokyo Service Center is now in construction at a similar supportive and affordable housing complex.
