This week's Throwback Thursday captures three years of change at the Commercial Exchange Building in Downtown Los Angeles, which has recently been reactivated as the newest outpost of the Freehand Hotel chain.

The before image, captured in July 2014, shows the building as it appeared before Sydell Group began its $40-million conversion project.

The latter image, taken in July 2017, shows a reactivated ground plane along 8th Street.

Killefer Flammang Architects designed the project, with transformed the interior of the 13-story, 93-year-old office building into a mixture of 226 hotel rooms with a fitness center and a rooftop deck.  Another highlight of the development is its iconic blade sign, which is now regularly lit for the first time since the mid-1950s.
