A construction crane protrudes high above the former site of the Umeya Rice Cake Company in Downtown, where work commenced last year for a new affordable and supportive housing complex from Little Tokyo Service Center.
The project, named The Umeya for the former occupant of the site at 412-426 S. Crocker Street, will eventually consist of a seven-story building featuring 175 apartments studio, one-, and two-bedroom unit apartments.
LTSC will set aside all of the apartments for rent by low-, very low-, and extremely low-income households, including half as permanent supportive housing, offering wraparound services to formerly unhoused residents.
FSY Architects is designing the contemporary low-rise structure, which will have a V-shaped foot print, leaving space for two courtyards at street level. Plans also call for 13,000 square feet of ground floor space dedicated to community uses, retail, and service providers. A new mural by Skid Row artist Showzart will adorn the wall of the apartment complex.
The new apartment building is set for completion in 2025.
The project is among a handful of new affordable housing developments from LTSC now in the construction stage, joining projects above Metro's Vermont/Santa Monica Station in East Hollywood and at 823 Cleveland Street in Chinatown. More recently, LTSC started work on a mixed-use project just north of the Japanese American National Museum.
