City of Hope Orange County's cancer hospital rises in Irvine

Nearly two years after cutting the ribbon on its Lennar Foundation Cancer Center in Irvine, City of Hope Orange County is hard at work on a new hospital complex next door.

The six-story building, rising on a site at the intersection of Marine Way and Barranca Parkway, is a six-story structure which will feature 73 patient beds when it opens in 2025. At completion, it will be the only Orange County hospital exclusively focusing on cancer treatment.

The team behind the cancer hospital includes project manager Jacobs, general contractor Hensel Phelps, and HOK as architect.

City of Hope reportedly paid $108 million for the 11 acres of land that comprise the campus, which was previously a component of a planned 2-million-square-foot office complex that semiconductor company Broadcom had intended to make its corporate headquarters. However, the campus was only partially finished at the time when Broadcom was acquired by Avago in 2016, resulting in the land being sold as part of a sale-leaseback agreement with Five Point Holdings, LLC, which in turn sold the land to City of Hope.

The existing cancer center, which sits directly southwest of the new hospital, was converted from one of Broadcom's unused buildings in a reuse project designed by ZGF.

City of Hope is also engaged in a major expansion of its main campus 50 miles north in the City of Duarte.
