A pedestrian and transit plaza in Pico Union is slated for expansion, per a motion introduced by 1st District Councilmember Gil Cedillo.
The existing plaza - completed in 2009 at the intersection of Pico Boulevard, Lake and Hoover Streets - was created by upgrading formerly desolate patches of concrete with new furniture, landscaping pedestrian lighting and other placemaking features.
A second phase of the project, driven by the Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative and the Byzantine Latino Quarter business improvement district, will expand the plaza to the north through a curb extension along an adjoining property at 1266 S. Lake Street. The land owner has already given permission for for this action, which requires no new funding.
LANI has also built a similar plaza at the intersection of Pico and Normandie Avenue.
