Eight months into construction, a new Silver Line bus platform is beginning to take form just east of Union Station.
Budgeted at approximately $37.6 million, the project will streamline transfers between Silver Line passengers and other operations at Union Station be relocating an existing stop from Alameda Street to a center-median platform within the El Monte Busway. It will be linked to Patsaouras Plaza through a 500-foot pedestrian bridge, dramatically shortening what is now a quarter-mile walk.
A highlight of the project includes a "Wind Bridge" display by the artist Ned Kahn, which will wrap the bridge with perforated stainless steel panels that move with the breeze, creating rippling patterns of light and shade.
Completion has been scheduled for 2018.
