Nearly four years ago, work kicked off for a $350-million Federal Courthouse at 1st Street and Broadway, filling in an unsightly dirt pit in the Downtown Civic Center.  The completed 10-story edifice, which opened last October, features 24 courtrooms and 32 judicial chambers, in addition to operations for the U.S. Marshals, the General Services Administration, the Federal Public Defender and the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Architectural photographer Hunter Kerhart offers up a before-and-after glimpse at the mid-rise building, which was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in the form of a glass cube floating above a stone base.

The first image, captured in December 2014, shows the courthouse slightly over one year into construction.  Its steel frame had just reached its ninth floor above ground level.

The latter image, taken in August 2017, shows the completed product, with a shimmering facade that changes color with the shifting sun.
