A red tower crane stands high above what was once the Olympia Medical Center in Mid-Wilshire, as work continues to transform the shuttered facility into a new neuropsychiatric hospital for UCLA Health.
The project, which began construction in March 2023, is located at 5900 Olympic Boulevard - just east of the notorious Fairfax-Olympic-San Vicente "asterisk." It is intended as both an expansion of and replacement for the 74-bed Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, which is located at the main UCLA hospital campus in Westwood. The new campus will feature a total of 119 beds, all catering to patients facing mental and behavioral health problems.
HOK and McCarthy Building Companies headline the design-build team for the new hospital, which is a combination of new construction and rehabilitation of existing buildings.
In addition to more patient beds, the Mid-Wilshire hospital will have space for ancillary functions such as food service, imaging, a pharmacy, labs, and administrative offices. Therapy spaces are planned on each floor, while rooftop terraces and gardens at the ground level will be available for use by both patients and staff.
The approximately 175,000-square foot hospital is scheduled for completion in 2026, according to a project website. The total cost of the project has been estimated as $400-million.
Even with its large investment in Mid-Wilshire, UCLA Health remains in a buying mood. Last month, UCLA announced the acquisition of the 260-bed West Hills Hospital and Medical Center.
