A makeover of a key north-south corridor in El Sereno is coming soon using funds from the scuttled extension of the SR-710 Freeway, per a notice issued by the City of Los Angeles.
The Eastern Avenue Multimodal Transportation Improvement project, which would include the roughly 1.5-mile stretch of Eastern Avenue between Huntington Drive to the north and Valley Boulevard to the south, calls for the addition of new pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, as well as improved access to transit. In addition to new medians and sidewalks, plans call for:
- curb extensions at six signalized intersections;
- new street and pedestrian lighting;
- new traffic signals and crosswalks at up to five intersections;
- feedback signage near Farmdale Elementary School; and
- upgrades to 10 different bus stops.
Additionally, the project may include additional bicycle improvements within a half-mile radius of Eastern Avenue, as well as new landscaping and street trees.
Work on the project is expected to begin this year and conclude within 17 months.
Eastern Avenue is one of three corridors in the City of Los Angeles to benefit from the $700 million in funding freed up by the cancellation of the 710 extension. More ambitious makeovers could bring bike and bus lanes to Huntington Drive and bus rapid transit to Valley Boulevard.
