The Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission will consider landmark status for a 1960s office building in Koreatown, as a mixed-use development is considered on a portion of the property.
Beneficial Plaza and Liberty Park - currently known as Wilshire Park Place - was completed in 1967 on an approximately 4.5-acre site at 3700-3732 Wilshire Boulevard. It features an 11-story office tower, originally constructed as the headquarters of the Beneficial Standard Life Insurance Company. Designed by SOM, the property is highlighted by an open lawn which fronts Wilshire Boulevard - dubbed Liberty Park
The lawn, though privately owned, is sometimes used outdoor gatherings. Planning is currently underway to convert a City-owned parking lot adjacent to the building into public green space.
Annette van Duren submitted the application for monument status on behalf of a group known as "Friends of Save Liberty Park."
Jamison Services, which acquired the property nearly 20 years ago, filed plans last year with the City of Los Angeles to construct a mixed-use high-rise development on the property, replacing its lawn. The project, designed by CallisonRTKL, would feature a 36-story tower with 506 residential units, as well as 62,000 square feet of shops and restaurants.
Should the property be granted Historic Cultural Monument status, any potential construction on the site could be halted for upwards of 360 days to "evaluate preservation alternatives."
