KTGY Architecture + Planning has unveiled designs for Hope on Alvarado, a new homeless housing complex planned in the Westlake district.
Aedis Real Estate Group is behind the project, which will employ shipping containers as its primary building material. This unique design will allow for a six-month construction timeline, expected to commence during the first half of 2018.
The four-story structure, located at 166 S. Alvarado Street, will feature 84 affordable housing units, with studio and one-bedroom floor plans between 440 and 480 square feet. Parking will also be provided for social services staff, while residents will each have a bike storage space.
The building is centered around a courtyard, with floor-to-ceiling glazing that distinguishes support services at the ground level. The apartments are created out of several containers, with the doors and portions of the metal skin removed.
LSA Capital is financing the project, in partnership with sponsors Jerry Jacobs, Cott Baldridge and Leslie Wise, wokring with the Foundation for Affordable Housing. Hope on Alvarado is considered a model for future developments in other dense urban areas.
