Developers Forest City and QIC have revised and scaled back plans for a mixed-use complex surrounding the South Bay Galleria, following feedback from neighbors in Redondo Beach.
The revised development plan caps the number of residential units at 300 - all located along the Hawthorne Boulevard side of the property. Additionally, building heights will be reduced along Kingsdale Avenue. The original proposal had called for a maximum of 434 apartments, including an eight-story building along Kingsdale.
With the number of apartments cut back, Forest City and QIC are now planning office space within the project, as well as a new new neighborhood park that would feature children's play areas and programmable open space.
Other elements of the proposed development - such as a 150-key hotel and new parking accommdations - are unchanged. The existing mall - anchored by Macys, Kohl's and an AMC multiplex - will also remain intact.
A new rendering of the Galleria shows mid-rise and low-rise structures, centered around green space. The project's design team includes Gensler, AHBE, KGM, RSM Design, Tait and Togawa Smith Martin.
Construction of the project is expected to occur over more than 40 months, starting in 2020 and finishing in 2023.
