Barry Shy's proposal to construct a high-rise building behind the popular Ace Hotel will take an important step forward this month, when the project goes before the Los Angeles City Planning Commission.

The proposed development, which would replace a surface parking lot at 920 S. Hill Street, calls for the construction of a 32-story, 346-foot-tall building featuring 239 dwelling units, approximately 5,700 square feet of retail space and parking for 295 vehicles.  The mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom units would provide access to amenities such as a gym, a rooftop deck and other communal features.

Architect David Takacs is designing the tower, one of four projects he currently has in process for Shy.

The Planning Department's staff report recommends approval for the project, as well as its sister development at 6th and Main Streets.  A third tower - planned at Broadway and Olympic - was approved earlier this year.
