One year after we last dropped by just south of the SR-134, framing is complete for the largest affordable housing complex in the history of the City of Glendale.

The project, which is being co-developed by Linc Housing Corp. and National CORE, is located on a site at 515 Pioneer Drive which Glendale acquired in 2019. Plans call for a total of 340 studio, one-, and two-bedroom dwellings above parking for 342 vehicles.

All of the apartments are to cater to renters earning between 30 and 80 percent of the area median income level

KFA Architecture is 515 Pioneer, which consists of interconnected five-story buildings. Plans call for an exterior of stucco, fiber cement panels, and thin brick veneer, as well as amenities such as courtyards, community gardens, rooftop decks, and children's play areas.

At the time the project went before the Glenda Design Commission in 2021, it was indicated that a cul-de-sac on Kenilworth Avenue would be transformed a pedestrian paseo, with connections to an existing tunnel beneath the SR-134 freeway to reach Fremont Park.

The project site is one of two large properties acquired by the City of Glendale in 2019 to preserve them for affordable housing development. The other, located at 900-920 Broadway, is now being developed with 92 income-restricted apartments.
