The first half of South Park's Axis apartments has already opened its doors at the corner of Broadway and 12th Street. Now its second half is unwrapped next to the iconic Herald Examiner Building one block north.
The seven-story building, which is being developed by Forest City, will feature 177 studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments and 7,300 square feet of ground-floor retail space when it opens later this year. Plans also call for 276 vehicle parking stalls, as well as a slew of open space amenities.
Togawa Smith Martin is designing the podium-type building, which is clad with a mix of red metal panels and white stucco. It will be separated from its historic neighbor through a landscaped paseo, cutting north to south between 11th Street and an adjoining alleyway.
The earlier building, a similar blue-and-white structure, offers an additional 214 apartments above commercial space.
Forest City recently announced plans to construct a 27-story high-rise tower at a nearby property across from Grand Hope Park, which would replace its current Los Angeles offices.
