After a lengthy legal battle, the La Cañada Flintridge City Council has approved plans for a Builder's Remedy project at 600 Foothill Boulevard, developer Cedar Street Partners has announced.
The proposed five-story building, which would rise from a corner lot at Foothill's intersection with Woodleigh Lane, would include 80 homes - 13 percent of which would be deed-restricted affordable units - as well as 16 short-term rental units, offices, and a two-level subterranean parking garage.
“This is a win for housing, for the rule of law, and for a community that needs more choices,” said Cedar Street Partners managing member Jonathan C. Curtis in a news release. “We are grateful the City has approved 600 Foothill. Our team is ready to deliver high-quality homes including affordable homes for educators and essential workers, alongside thoughtful design, safety and sustainability.”
Approval of 600 Foothill comes nearly two years after a Los Angeles Superior Court judge concluded that La Cañada Flintridge had violated state law in denying the project. The City declined to appeal that decision when faced with the prospect of posting a $14 million bond to do so.

La Cañada Flintridge's approval of 600 Foothill comes at a time when cities continue to do battle with applicants attached to Builder's Remedy projects. In Beverly Hills, the City's Planning Commission recently rejected plans for a 26-story tower using the state law.
