Two blocks north of Metro's Expo/La Brea Station, the Cesar Chavez Foundation and New Directions for Veterans has broken ground on an affordable housing complex targeted at seniors and veterans.

The approximately 30,000-square-foot project site, located at 3015 S. West View Street, will consist of three- and four-story buildings featuring 32 units for homeless veterans, four units for homeless seniors veterans, 27 units for seniors and one manager's unit above parking for 53 parking spaces.  Other project components will include a community garden, a computer room, a common kitchen, a fitness facility and a laundry room.  Social services and veterans programs will also be offered on-site.

Architecture firm Togawa Smith Martin is designing the low-rise structure, with assistance from TGP Landscape Architecture.  Renderings portray a building with Spanish Colonial Revival characteristics, similar to 1920s multifamily buildings in the surrounding neighborhood. 

The project replaced 15 existing housing units.  All former tenants have been relocated off-site.

Although Expo/La Brea Station has yet to spawn a large development, multi-acre mixed-use projects have become the norm at other stations.  Construction is already underway for landmark developments at Expo/Sepulveda and Culver City Stations, and another is proposed at Expo/Bundy Station.
