Rio Hondo Community College is the latest Southern California institution looking to build affordable housing for students on its campus.
The school's proposed project, as detailed in a new environmental study, would replace portions of two parking lots at 3600 Workman Mill Road. Plans call for the construction of a four-story, approximately 90,000-square-foot building with capacity for up to 400 beds. The building would include two wings, separated by an approximately 11,000-square-foot courtyard.
A design for the project has yet to be approved by the Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees. Construction will also require an environmental clearance and other building permits.
Pending approvals, construction is expected to begin in June 2028 and be completed over a period of 12 to 18 months.
The project is supported by grant funds made available by AB 183, AB 190, and SB 169, which created grant programs for community colleges to develop affordable housing on their campuses. Other Los Angeles County colleges such as Compton College and Long Beach City College are either building or planning similar projects.
