Developer Linc Housing Corp. has broken ground on a project that will transform the 1930s Long Beach Armory into an affordable housing complex.
The project, located at 854 E. 7th Street, will reuse the long-vacant Armory building and add five stories of new construction next door, creating 64 one- and two-bedroom apartments for low-income seniors age 55 years and older earning between 30 and 70 percent of the area median income level.
“Developments like Armory Arts Collective show what’s possible when we align housing production with equity, sustainability, and preservation,” said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson in a news release. “By reactivating a historic landmark and adding new density near transit, we’re expanding affordable housing options for older adults on fixed incomes, while strengthening the long-term livability and economic resilience of the City of Long Beach."
The historic Armory building is to be converted to resident amenities such as a community room and an art studio. Other common features will include a landscaped courtyard and an outdoor deck.
Studio One Eleven is designing the project, with Howard CDM serving as a consultant and Walton Construction, Inc. as general contractor.
Completion of the Armory Arts Collective is expected in 2027.
