Measure to overturn LA’s ‘mansion tax’ heads to ballot. Here’s what voters should know for November "It was widely pitched as a 'mansion tax.' Jesse Zwick: The tax that’s defunding your kid’s school "Nowhere are these losses hurting more than in our schools and community colleges, which receive 53 percent of LA’s property tax dollars. That means if ULA has raised $1.14 billion while destroying between $718 million and $1.57 billion in property tax revenue, more than half of that loss — somewhere between $381 million and $834 million — has fallen on schools." (Daily News)
A plan to cut a California tax is going to voters. Why LA’s ‘mansion tax’ is at the center of it "The statewide proposition would trim transfer taxes to just one-twentieth of 1% of a real estate sale’s value. Measure ULA’s top rate is 100 times higher. It would also require some voter-initiated tax measures to clear a two-thirds threshold rather than a simple majority. In Los Angeles, measure ULA passed with 58%." (CalMatters)
California’s rail systems need more riders. High gas prices could be fueling a new surge "Gas prices are skyrocketing due to the war in Iran. At the same time, public transportation ridership has seen a significant increase in the Los Angeles and San Francisco regions." (LA Times)
