The 105-year-old building that houses Downtown's Globe Theatre is being revived as commercial office space.
Construction is now visibly underway at the Garland Building, an 11-story Beaux Arts tower designed by Morgan, Walls & Morgan. Permit filings with the Department of Building and Safety describe the improvements as consisting of reactivating existing ground-level retail space and offices on the floors above. An existing basement space is also being transformed from office space to a bar.
An earlier plan to convert the building into apartments has been abandoned.
City records list Omgivning as the architect for the Garland Building rehabilitation. The Downtown-based firm specializes in adaptive reuse projects.
According to the Los Angeles Conservancy, the existing Globe marquee was installed in the 1940s when the theatre was known for showing newsreels. Prior to that, it was known as the Morosco.
