In a familiar story, a shuttered school campus in a suburban locale is set to give way to new housing.
Villages at Fruit Street, a project from Lewis Homes, is slated for the former Lutheran High School campus located at 3960 Fruit Street in the City of La Verne. The nine-acre campus, which shuttered in 2023, is set to give way to a project which would include 121 homes in a mix of townhome and standalone single-family dwellings.
WHA is designing the project, which would include a mix of two- and three-story buildings in the Mediterranean revival style. Plans show a mix of two-, three-, and four-bedroom homes, arranged around a network of private driveways, and ranging from approximately 1,840 to 2,300 square feet in size. One element of the existing school, a gymansium, would be retained.
The project, now under environmental review, will require a general plan amendment among other entitlements. Construction would take roughly two years to complete.
Similar projects replacing closed public schools with for-sale housing are at the works at sites throughout Los Angeles County, but are particularly common in the San Gabriel Valley.
