Brookfield, the largest commercial office landlord in Downtown Los Angeles, has launched a $60-million renovation of the atrium at one of its trophy properties on Bunker Hill.
Halo, as the redesigned atrium will be called, sits beneath the two red granite towers of the Wells Fargo Center on Grand Avenue. It reforms a space that has been criticized for its closed-off configuration, which Brookfield cast as being out of line with the environment sought by modern office tenants.
Through the renovation, Brookfield hopes to create an indoor-outdoor tenant amenity space that is also open to residents, visitors, and employees of neighboring buildings, with improved connections to the surroundings of Bunker Hill.
The Wells Fargo Center's original architect SOM has been tapped to design Halo, which will feature double the seating of the old atrium. Other project components will include up to two full-service restaurants, an indoor-outdoor bar, a half dozen or more quick-service restaurants, grab-and-go vendors, fitness operators, and bike storage.
Halo will also feature "cultural activations" through the owner's nonprofit organization Arts Brookfield.
The redesigned space is set to open in 2019.
Brookfield, which also owns a full city block bounded by 7th, 8th, and Figueroa Streets, announced plans last year to construct a high-rise tower behind the Figat7th shopping center.
