San Gabriel Valley officials broke ground yesterday on a new multi-use trail next to the San Dimas Wash.

The 1.6-mile pathway, stretching from the intersection of Sunflower Avenue and Gladstone Street to Grand Avenue and Arrow Highway, is the first component of what will eventually be a trail network connecting the A Line's Glendora Station to neighborhoods throughout the city.

“This project is a powerful example of what regional collaboration can accomplish. By working closely with the City of Glendora and our funding partners, we are delivering a safe, fully separated path with shade and native landscaping that directly connects our neighborhoods, schools, and transit,” said San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments president Ed Reece in a news release. “These are tangible improvements residents will see and enjoy for generations, showing that we can accomplish far more together than any single agency could achieve alone.”

The $1.2-million project, funded by a combination of local, regional, and state sources, will include a fully-separated pathway for cyclists and pedestrians, lined with new landscaping, shade structures, and other park-like features. Plans also call for improved crossings at intersections and mid-block sites.

Glendora's ultimate plan is for a more than 10-mile network of trails anchored by the Metro station, connecting to Glendora Village, Citrus College, and other destinations. The estimated cost of the program is $36.6 million, with $21.7 million already secured.
