In unincorporated Florence-Firestone, construction is complete for a new affordable housing complex next door to the A Line.
The Metro @ Florence Apartments, developed by Meta Housing Corp., replaced a car wash at 7220 Maie Avenue next to Florence Station. The new seven-story building features 160 studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments reserved for households earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income level. At the time of the project's groundbreaking, it was expected that 72 units would serve as permanent supportive housing.
Besides housing, approved plans called for more than 12,000 square feet of open space for residents (including a rooftop deck and a courtyard), 3,100 square feet of ground-floor retail space, 2,100 square feet of community and office space, and parking for 120 vehicles.
Funding sources for the project include $51 million in bonds among other money approved by Los Angeles County. Additionally, the California Strategic Growth Council awarded $30.8 million for the project in 2023 through the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities program, which was expected to cover the cost of on-site supportive services, laundry facilities, outdoor recreation areas, and the purchase of nine zero emission buses.
The Metro site sites east across Maie Avenue from AMCAL's 109-unit Florence Apartments, which was built on the former site of the Florence Library.
