A proposed development near Hollywood's Target Husk faces its next test on May 10 when it heads to the Los Angeles City Planning Commission.

The project, a joint venture between LaTerra Development and Gemdale Corp., calls for the construction of a mixed-use building on a currently vacant lot at 1350 N. Western Avenue.  The proposed seven-story building would feature 203 studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units - including 17 for very-low-income households - above 1,4231 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and 188 vehicle parking spaces.

Urban Architecture Lab is designing the podium-type development, which would incorporate open spaces amenities such as a swimming pool, and place art installations at ground-level along Fernwood Avenue.

A handful of Hollywood residents well-known for challenging new developments have appealed the project to the Planning Commission, with representation by attorney Robert Silverstein.  They argue that the city erred in signing off on the development's environmental studies.

A staff report submitted by the Planning Department recommends that Commission deny the appeal.

In addition to the aforementioned Target Husk, other projects at the nearby Sunset Boulevard - Western Avenue intersection a 293-unit mixed-use complex from Reliable Properties and a 735-unit development planned by American Commercial Equities.
