Construction has commenced for a mixed-use affordable housing complex at the corner of 7th and Witmer Streets in the Westlake district.

The project, which comes from the non-profit Deep Green Housing, will consist of a six-story building featuring 76 units of permanent supportive housing with 6,035 square feet of ground-floor commercial space and podium parking for up to 34 vehicles.

Los Angeles-based architecture firm HCRA is designing the 7th and Witmer project, which will feature studio- and one-bedroom floor plans, as well as amenities such as a central courtyard, an outdoor deck, and a community room.

The approximately $30-million development - budgeted at approximately $363,000 per dwelling unit - will also house a Metro bike share station at its ground floor.

The development site is located just east of The Seven West apartments, an 87-unit mixed-use complex which just opened last year.  East across Witmer Street, a Chinese developer is planning to replace a vacant lot with a 29-story residential-retail tower.
