Arizona State University has leased 80,000 square feet of the historic Herald Examiner Building in Downtown Los Angeles, according to multiple published reports.
ASU will use the new space as a satellite campus for its Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, representing a significant expansion of its current Los Angeles area operations, which are based out of Santa Monica.
The Julia Morgan-designed Herald Examiner Building, located at the southwest corner of 11th Street and Broadway, has been mostly vacant since 1989 when its namesake newspaper ceased operations. Longtime plans to reactivate the building as commercial offices finally came to fruition in 2015, when developer Georgetown Co. took a controlling stake in the property from its longtime owner - the Herald Examiner's publisher Hearst Corp.
The new ASU campus will open in 2020, in conjunction with a new restaurant at the building's ground floor.
In Culver City, the L.A. Business Journal reports that mobile entertainment company Jam City, Inc. has leased 40,000 square feet of office space at 3562 Eastham Drive. Jam City will relocate on September 4 to its new home, which was previously occupied by Disney subsidiary Maker Studios.
The move more than doubles the size of Jam City's current office - which is located at another building in the Hayden Tract.
