Last month, renderings emerged for the proposed Carol Kimmelman Sports and Academic Campus, which would repurpose much of the Victoria Golf Course in Carson as a public recreation facility. Now, developer Plenitude Holdings, LLC and architecture firms Perkins + Will and RELM Studio have unveiled their plans for the other half of the struggling golf course, which is owned by Los Angeles County.
The project, called the Creek at Dominguez Hills, would redevelop the 87 acres of golf course adjacent to the Dominguez Channel with a mix of recreation, health, and fitness uses. Plans call for approximately 532,000 square feet of new construction, including a multi-use indoor sports complex, a youth learning experience facility, an indoor skydiving facility, an enhanced driving range, a marketplace, a clubhouses, a recreation and dining center, a sports wellness center, 25,000 square feet of restaurant space, and parking for 2,165 vehicles. A community park, a putting green, a jogging path, and a ziplining facility are also proposed.
The proposed multi-use indoor facility would serve as the centerpiece of the campus. It is envisioned as one-story, 170,000-square-foot facility which would feature up to 16 sports courts for basketball or volleyball, two synthetic field turfs for baseball, a training facility, a children's play zone, a cafe, and other ancillary spaces.
The 6.6-acre community park is planned between the clubhouse and the proposed driving range, and would offer a children's playground, a picnic area, and space for programmed community events such as farmers markets or movie screenings.
According to an initial study for the project, the Creek at Dominguez Hills is expected to be built over approximately 18 months, with a targeted completion date in late 2020.
The remaining 87 acres of the golf course will be developed by the Kimmelman Foundation are being developed by the Kimmelman Foundation with a similar blend of public recreation facilities, with an emphasis on soccer and tennis. Completion of the Kimmelman Facility is anticipated to occur in summer 2020, shortly before the Creek at Dominguez Hills.
