Metro expects to begin construction next year on improvements to a series of bus stops along the northern perimeter of Union Station. 

The Cesar Chavez Bus Stop Improvement project, funded by an FTA Ladders of Opportunity grant, is highlighted by a new transit pavilion planned for a currently unused site across the street from Metro headquarters at the southeast corner of Cesar E. Chavez Avenue and Vignes Streets.  Plans also call for replacing bus shelters at three other stops located at Cesar Chavez's intersections with Vignes and Alameda Streets.

Renderings of the proposed transit pavilion show a landscaped space centered on shade structures above outdoor seating.  The pavilion will also include a Metro Bike station.

Completion of construction is expected by late 2019.

The project is the first in a series of capital improvements intended to better connect Union Station to its surroundings, including a new forecourt and esplanade at the transit hub's main entrance on Alameda Street.  Construction is already underway for a separate project which will create a new Silver Line platform in the median of the El Monte Busway.

In the more distant future, Metro is planning more substantial upgrades to Union Station, including the construction of run-through tracks and an expanded passenger concourse.  These improvements will facilitate a 63 percent increase in regional rail service through Union Station.
