Georgetown Co. is ramping up construction at its renovation of the Herald Examiner Building in Downtown Los Angeles, which is now encircled by protective barriers and tarp.
Located at 11th Street and Broadway, the historic property will house an 80,000-square-foot satellite campus for Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. Both schools are currently based in Santa Monica.
Built by William Randolph Hearst in 1914, the Herald Examiner Building is well known for its Spanish Colonial Revival and Mission Revival Architecture. The five-story building, designed by the architect Julia Morgan, has been vacant save for occasional film shoots since the demise of its namesake newspaper in 1989.
The Hearst Corporation has considered reviving the historic structure for more than a decade, but plans kicked into high gear in 2015, when Georgetown Co. took an ownership stake in the property. Notably, the renovation will restore the arched windows lining the building's ground floor, which have been boarded up since they were damaged during a labor dispute more than 50 years ago.
In addition to ASU, the restaurant Republique is also expected to open on the Herald Examiner Building's ground-floor.
The ASU campus is scheduled to open in 2020.
Other ongoing or recently-finished projects in the surrounding area include two abutting apartment buildings, as well as Hoxton and Proper Hotels.
