Construction is complete for a $44-million affordable housing development near the Blue and Green Lines in Willowbrook. 

The Gateway at Willowbrook, which was built upon a formerly vacant lot at 11737 Wilmington Avenue, features 105 one- and two-bedroom apartments reserved for low-income and formerly homeless seniors.  Rents are set between $864 and $1,126 per month, with residents allowed to use Section 8 vouchers.

Thomas Safran & Associates built the five-story edifice, which includes an 8,000-square-foot space at the ground floor which will serve as the new home of the Willowbrook Library.  Other project amenities include a community room, a computer room, and a fitness center.

“The Gateway at Willowbrook marked the first time that Los Angeles County partnered with the private sector to provide not only housing, but also a library,” Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said in a statement. “This is the epitome of what high-quality and affordable development and services can and should look like.”

Numerous subsidized affordable apartment complexes are in the works for the Willowbrook community, including projects from LINC Housing Corp. and Integral Group.

Construction is currently underway for a $109-million renovation of the Rosa Parks/Willowbrook Metro Rail Station, a project that is occurring concurrently with a phased closure and rebuild of the beleaguered Blue Line.

Thomas Safran & Associates is one of the most prolific builders of low-income housing in Los Angeles County.  Other ongoing projects include a new apartment complex targeted at veterans in Carson and the proposed redevelopment of the West L.A. animal shelter.
