Thirteen years after the project was originally conceived, the Santa Monica Proper hotel is scheduled to make its debut next month at 710 Wilshire Boulevard.
Designed by Howard Laks Architects, the project consists of the adaptive reuse of a historic Spanish Colonial Revival building as well as new construction, creating a total of 271 guest rooms with ground-floor retail and restaurant space. The project also includes ancillary features including event space, a gym, a rooftop pool, and four levels of basement parking.
The centerpiece of the project, the 1920s Santa Monica Professional Building, was seismically retrofitted after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, but required additional reinforcement to meet current building codes. The design of the new hotel preserves the property's historic elevations, as well as its Y-shaped tower, while also connecting to new construction through a podium-level bridge.
The new construction is designed as a curving, six-story building that is angled to reflect the Y-shaped landmark. However, the building is also set back from the street edge to maintain views of the Santa Monica Professional Building when traveling east or west along Wilshire Boulevard.
Several food-and-beverage venues have been announced for the property, including a restaurant from Jessica Koslow and chef Gabriella Camara, which will occupy the ground-floor of the historic building.
In additional to Howard Laks Architects, the project team includes Structural Focus, Griswold Conservation Associates, Robert Chattel, and Kelly Wearstler Interiors.
The Santa Monica Proper is being developed by Kor Group, and is one of two currently under construction in the Los Angeles area. The other, a 148-room hotel within a historic YWCA Building in Downtown Los Angeles, is also scheduled to open this summer.
