Non-profit developer and service provider LA Family Housing has completed construction of a $52-million permanent supportive housing development in Sun Valley.
The Irmas Family Campus, billed as the first facility of its kind in the San Fernando Valley, replaced a motel at the corner of Lankershim Boulevard and Arminta Street. In addition to 49 units of permanent supportive housing, the facility includes a 6,000-square-foot health center - operated by Northeast Valley Health Corporation - bridge housing for families and individuals, service centers for Neighborhood Legal Services, the Veterans Administration, the Los Angeles Unified School District, and other city agencies, and administrative offices for LA Family Housing.
“The Campus is the physical manifestation of our three decades of work and best practices in helping families and individuals transition out of homelessness,” said LAFH President and CEO, Stephanie Klasky-Gamer. “Last year, we helped nearly 11,000 people. Now that we’ve created a space to strengthen collaboration and efficiencies in how our region delivers services – we’re going to help even more.”
The Campus includes two buildings, designed by Gonzalez Goodale Architects, flanking a landscaped central courtyard. Buildings range between two and four stories in height.
In addition to County, Federal, and private philanthropic funds, the project is among the first to receive financing through the Measure HHH, the $1.2-billion bond measure passed by Los Angeles voters in 2016.
“When voters passed Prop. HHH in 2016, they gave us the tools to build thousands of supportive housing units faster than we ever have before -- and we are delivering on that promise,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “We now have more than 100 supportive housing projects and dozens of other facilities in the pipeline...."
By consolidating different agencies under a single roof, the Irmas Family Campus is viewed as a new model for homeless services which strengthens collaboration within the coordinated entry system.
"LA Family Housing is the model for how to effectively provide comprehensive homeless services to individuals, children, and families in the San Fernando Valley and the greater City of Los Angeles. Instead of just treating homelessness, LA Family Housing guides individuals towards long-term solutions to homelessness like supportive housing and wraparound services,” said City of Los Angeles Councilwoman Nury Martinez.
In addition to the Irmas Campus, LA Family Housing has multiple projects in the development pipeline. The non-profit recently broke ground on another permanent supportive housing project at the corner of 69th and Main Streets in South Los Angeles.
