The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has voted to approve $6.5 million in funding for proposed supportive housing projects in Santa Monica and the Florence community.

The Santa Monica project, called The Nest, is being developed by Community Corporation of Santa Monica.  Plans call for replacing a single-family dwelling at 2012 19th Street with a two-story, eight-unit shared housing building reserved for young adults in unstable circumstances, including homelessness.

The proposed development, which would provide two-bedroom units, would cost approximately $5.6 million, including a $1.5 million funding commitment from Los Angeles County.

The South Los Angeles development, slated for a property at 410-432 E. Florence Avenue, would consist of a five-story building featuring 50 units of extremely low-income affordable housing and one manager's apartment.

City records list the project applicant as Unique Construction and its architect as Edwin Mohabir.  LINC Housing Corporation had previously been attached as developer.

The total cost of the project is listed as $15.8 million, of which Los Angeles County would provide $5 million in funding.

The Florence Avenue development was profiled by the Los Angeles Times after City Councilmember Curren Price refused to issue a "letter of acknowledgment" which would allow LINC Housing Corp. to apply for Measure HHH funding.  The City Council's ability to "veto" affordable housing developments was later outlawed by a bill signed last year by former Governor Jerry Brown.
