A medical office and research center is planned just west of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to an initial study published this month by the City of West Hollywood.
The West Hollywood Cancer Center, which is being developed by local real estate investment firm Faring, would rise from an approximately 34,500-square-foot property at the southwest corner of Robertson and Beverly Boulevards. Plans call for the construction of a 10-story building containing approximately 271,000 square feet of medical offices and research space, street-fronting retail space, and 346 parking spaces in four subterranean levels.
Designed by Office Untitled, the proposed Cancer Center would rise to a maximum height of 163 feet above ground level. The building is described as having a terraced look, with a two-to-four-story podium contain retail and restaurant space, medical offices, and a seven-story structure above featuring research space, offices, and restaurant space on the two upper levels.
The project site is currently home to the Charles and Ray Eames-designed Herman Miller showroom - located at 8806 Beverly Boulevard - which would be retained. Faring proposes to brace the building in place using structural beams, thereby allowing new subterranean floors to be constructed on the project site. Following completion, the Herman Miller building would continue to serve as a design showroom.
Construction is anticipated to occur over approximately 30 months, pending approvals by the City of West Hollywood. A timeline has not been announced.
Faring intends to seek streamlined permitting for the project via SB 743 which establishes the surrounding neighborhood as a Transit Priority Area with frequent service on multiple bus routes.
Faring had previously considered building a 130-room hotel at the same property.
In addition to Cedars-Sinai, the project site is located a short distance from 8899 Beverly Boulevard, a 1960s medical office building which is being converted into housing.
