Now more than a year into construction, a new Los Angeles County office tower has passed its podium level in Koreatown, and steel framing is now beginning to rise.
The 20-story building, slated to be the new headquarters of the L.A. County Department of Mental Health, sits just north of the Department's current offices at 6th Street and Vermont Avenue. Plans call for approximately 468,000 square feet of offices seated above approximately 1,900 parking stalls and 10,000 square feet of commercial space.
Designed by Gensler, the tower will rise approximately 295 feet in height. Renderings depict a boxy, glass-clad building.
Trammell Crow Company is developing the $300-million tower, which is the first phase of the multi-stage Vermont Corridor project. Following the completion of the new office building, the Department of Mental Health's existing headquarters - a 12-story building at 550 S. Vermont Avenue - is to be converted into 172 apartments with street-level retail space. An adjacent property which is also owned by the County may also be developed with parking and housing.
Another component of the Vermont Corridor project - a 72-unit senior affordable housing development - is now under construction across the street.
Completion of the full Vermont Corridor development is scheduled to occur in 2023.
Diagonally across the intersection of 6th Street and Vermont Avenue, another institutional project is slated for a parking lot owned by the City of Los Angeles. The Korean American National Museum, designed by Morphosis, is on pace to break ground in Fall 2020.
