This past summer, Community Corp. of Santa Monica broke ground on a $25.5-million senior affordable housing development in the Pico neighborhood.  Now, the Santa Monica Architectural Review Board will take a look at a similar project planned just down the street.

The proposed development, called the Las Flores Apartments, would replace a cluster of small commercial building at 1834-1848 14th Street.  Plans call for the construction of a three-story edifice featuring 55 one-, two-, and three-bedroom dwellings atop 3,500 square feet of ground-floor retail and a 63-car basement parking garage.  The project would cater to would cater to households earning at or below 30, 60, and 80 percent of the area median income, according to a report given in January to the Santa Monica Housing Commission.

DE Architects is designing Las Flores, which is described as a series of cubic forms creating a tapestry of solids and voids.   The building's second floor would feature a central courtyard featuring containing landscaping and playground equipment.  Plans call for an exterior of metal panels and stucco.

A staff report represents indicates that this is a preliminary presentation to the Architectural Review Board.  Design feedback is to be provided, but no vote is scheduled at this point in time.

In addition to Community Corp.'s projects on 14th Street, another affordable housing complex is planned a short distance north at the former site of Santa Monica Nikkei Hall.

Other projects from Community Corp. include affordable housing developments on Lincoln Boulevard and adjacent to the Santa Monica Library.
