Architecture and planning firm GGLO Design has unveiled renderings of a proposed mixed-use supportive housing complex in South Los Angeles.
The proposed development, a joint venture between Innovative Housing Opportunities and National CORE, would span an approximately 75,000-square-foot site on Western Avenue between 87th and 88th Streets. Plans call for the construction multiple low-rise buildings which will feature 168 one-, two-, and three-bedroom dwellings in addition to ground-floor commercial uses.
GGLO's design for the project is described as having a "traditional main street building typology" along Western Avenue, with a sidewalk lined by community-serving facilities and restaurants. The larger building is divided into a series of structures that form a continuous street wall, but are intended to look as if they had been developed independently on separate parcels.
An existing alley located at the center of the project site will provide access to parking facilities, but will also be activated through new ground-level plazas that will be open to the public.
West of the alley, the project pares down in height to a garden-style residential community more similar in scale to adjacent single-family dwellings.
The project is among the last round of supportive housing developments slated to be funded by Measure HHH. The City of Los Angeles voted to award $9 million to the project in September 2019.
